Is the GhostBed 3D Matrix a Good Mattress for You?
Before we get into the nitty-gritty, I want to give you a brief overview of who this GhostBed might and might not work for. Take a look at the lists below to see if this GhostBed 3D Matrix could be right for you.
Who I recommend the 3D Matrix mattress for
- First and foremost, I’d say this bed is great for hot sleepers. It uses a special gel polymer to draw heat away from the body and adjust to your shape. That means it should sleep super cool.
- The 3D Matrix could be great for back and side combination sleepers. It has a soft feel and is nice and responsive, so you’ll feel more “on top of” than “in” this bed.
- Couples could also really like this mattress. You shouldn’t feel overly disturbed by a restless partner or pet on the 3D Matrix.
Who I don’t recommend the 3D Matrix mattress for
- Stomach sleepers might not get the support they need on this bed. The best mattress for stomach sleepers tends to have firm support that helps keep their hips in alignment with their shoulders. I’d point them towards our best mattress for stomach sleepers instead.
- Heavier sleepers (over 250 lbs) will most likely fare better on a mattress that offers firmer support. I’d recommend they check out our best mattresses for heavy people to find a better fit.
- Folks who prefer a firm feel may not like this GhostBed, which feels soft.
How Firm is the GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress?
Now that we’ve gone over the basics, let’s figure out how this mattress feels.
Firmness is a highly subjective measure, and can change a lot depending on one’s body weight, type, and preferred sleeping position. For reference, I’m 5’9” and about 125 lbs. This particular mattress might feel softer to a lighter sleeper or a little firmer to a heavier sleeper who sinks further into its comfort layers.
After rolling around on the mattress, I gave it a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. For reference, the industry standard for medium-firm is a 6.5 out of 10. So this is a soft to medium-soft mattress.
This mattress had a nice balanced feel that felt great on my back. Back sleepers should feel this bed filling in their lumbar region, which might be nice if gentle pressure relief helps with your back pain. This proper spinal alignment is crucial for back sleepers. Similarly, I felt a lot of cushioning around my pressure points, so side sleepers should be comfortable on this bed too.
I definitely felt more “on top of” than “stuck in” this mattress, so combination sleepers who need to move around and change positions easily at night should really like the 3D matrix. On the other hand, strict stomach sleepers could find this bed a bit too soft for their needs. I’d recommend they choose a firm mattress.

Testing the GhostBed 3D Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions
Depending on your body weight and how you sleep, the 3D Matrix is going to have a unique feel for you. Take a look at some of my recommendations below.
Is the GhostBed 3D Matrix a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
- Light Back Sleepers – I think this bed is a nice choice for lightweight back sleepers. These sleepers should find themselves adequately supported on this mattress, and its slightly softer feel should provide some nice pressure relief.
- Light Side Sleepers – I also like this bed for light side sleepers. It is just a bit softer than the industry standard for medium-firm, which is a great firmness level for side sleepers.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – This mattress isn’t firm enough for stomach sleepers, who need a mattress that will keep their hips from sinking out of line with their shoulders.
Is the GhostBed 3D Matrix a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – I think this mattress is good for average weight back sleepers who prefer a softer feel. For those who like more support, I’d opt for a slightly firmer bed.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – Average weight side sleepers should be really happy on this bed. It has a nice soft feel that will cradle their hips and shoulders. However, if you suffer from hip pain, I’d opt for an even plusher bed.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – This bed isn’t firm enough for these sleepers. As a general rule, stomach sleepers need a bed that ranks at least a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
Is the GhostBed 3D Matrix a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – This mattress doesn’t have the level of support that heavy people need. I’d recommend going with the GhostBed Luxe, which has stronger support, or a mattress specifically designed for heavy people.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – See above.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – See above.
Though firmness is important, it’s far from the only factor to consider when buying a new mattress. So, l tested the GhostBed 3D Matrix for pressure relief, edge support, and motion transfer.
GhostBed 3D Matrix Pain Relief Performance
For a mattress to relieve pain well, it needs to alleviate tension in the shoulders, hips, and lower back. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll it out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! As I move around the bed, the map records the force my body’s exerting on it. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
Back Pain— I think this mattress is a good choice for most sleepers with back pain. While I was lying on my back (the best position for those who suffer from back pain) I could feel the top layers of foam filling in the space at my lumbar region for some nice pressure relief.
Shoulder Pain — This is a great bed for those who suffer from shoulder pain. It has a nice soft feel that’s going to cradle that sensitive joint. At the same time, it’s responsive enough to keep you from feeling “stuck” in the mattress, which could exacerbate shoulder pain.
Hip Pain — I think most hip pain sufferers would do well on this mattress, except for side sleepers. Since the hip is such a large joint and side sleepers put a lot of pressure on it, I typically recommend side sleepers with hip pain choose a super plush mattress — a bed that’s a 5.5 on the firmness scale or lower.
GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress Performance for Couples
If you sleep with a partner, you’re going to want to account for a few extra factors. You’ll want to know how well a mattress absorbs movements, whether or not it’s good for sex, if it has sturdy edges, and if it’ll keep the both of you cool. Take a look at how the 3D Matrix stacks up in these categories.
Motion Transfer
Next I tested the 3D Matrix’s motion transfer, or the amount of movement detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. An important factor for all sleepers, but perhaps especially so for those who share a bed with a partner (or a rowdy pet).
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
Considering how bouncy the mattress is, these are pretty great motion transfer results! What they tell me is that in spite of the pocketed coil system’s lift, the top layer of memory foam does a lot to dampen and dissipate motion throughout the structure. Long story short — you won’t be too disturbed by your partner’s movements in the night.
Sex
The GhostBed 3D Matrix has a more “on top” than “in” the bed feel, which is ideal for sex. You want a bed that’s going to be bouncy and easy to move around on, and the 3D Matrix fits the bill. All in all this is a great mattress for couples.
Cooling
The 3D Matrix, like most GhostBed mattresses, sleeps super cool. Its cover uses the brand’s proprietary Ghost Ice fabric, which helps wick away moisture, and its matrix comfort layer is made from a gel polymer that helps dissipate body heat. To top it off, its coil layer provides some added a. I wouldn’t worry about overheating on this bed.
Edge Support
Finally, I tested the edge support on this GhostBed. Edge support is a measure of how supported you’ll feel if you sleep all the way on the side of your mattress.
I wished this GhostBed’s edges offered just a little more support. I felt okay when laying on the edge of the bed, but I felt like I was going to slide off when I sat on the edge of the mattress.
What is the GhostBed 3D Matrix Made Of?
Next up, let’s take a look at how this bed is made. I’ll really dig into this bed’s cooling features in this section, so you’ll want to keep reading if you overheat at night.
Cover —The 3D Matrix kicks things off with a cooling cover made of Ghost Ice fabric. This soft cover actually felt cool-to-the-touch. A lot of mattresses advertise this feature, but the 3D matrix really delivered.
3D Matrix Polymer Layer — Below the mattress cover is a special gel polymer layer. The gel polymer actually attracts your body heat and then drives it out of the bed, instead of trapping it in foam layers. This is what really ensures this bed sleeps cool. This gel is also soy-based and eco-friendly.
Comfort Layer — Up next is a layer of gel memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which allows the sleeper to sink in for some pleasant relief at the shoulders and hips. Though memory foam has a slight reputation for overheating at night, the gel-infusion helps dissipate heat.
Ghost Bounce Layer — Up next is a bouncy layer of latex-alternative foam. Like latex foam, this layer is dense and responsive, and it helps lift the sleeper up and out of the bed.
Transition Layer — Below that is a layer of transition foam. It helps ease the sleeper down into the pocketed coils below, and adds a bit more responsiveness.
Support Layer — The mattress’s support core is made of individually wrapped coils. These springs are highly responsive, infusing the mattress with some fantastic bounce. They also help promote airflow throughout the mattress, making it even more breathable.
Base Layer — Rounding things out is a thin layer of high-density foam. This material mostly serves to give the coils above it something to bounce off of.
GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress Unboxing and Off-Gassing
The GhostBed 3D Matrix is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which means you’ll have to unbox it at home. I’d allow for at least 24 hours after unboxing before using this bed. That will give the mattress time to fully decompress and release any gasses that got trapped during compression.

My favorite things about the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress
My favorite thing about this bed-in-a-box mattress is its temperature regulation. This mattress sleeps super cool, and I think that’s a huge bonus for any hot sleepers out there. I also really appreciate the 3D Matrix’s ability to isolate motion. That and its cooling abilities should make this mattress a great choice for couples.
I also appreciate the soft feel of this mattress. I think other side sleepers will also enjoy the cushioning feel of this GhostBed’s foams.
My GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress complaints
I wish this mattress offered a little more edge support. I also think heavier sleepers and stomach sleepers might find this mattress a bit too soft for their needs. The softer feel of this mattress could impact its durability for heavier sleepers.
I’ll also note here that a few customers found the GhostBed’s cover a little slippery. Some folks mentioned that it was hard to keep their fitted sheets on the bed. I’d recommend adding a mattress protector to the bed to get a little extra traction if you run into this issue.
